What is intersex?
Intersex means that the body of a person does not fit the typical expectations of so-called “female” and “male” bodies. Intersex is a wide spectrum of sex variations.
What is included in sex variations?
Sex variations can be secondary sex characteristics like body hair, muscle mass, breasts and body form, primary sex characteristics like gonads and genitals, chromosomal structures and/or hormone levels.
When is intersex recognized?
Being intersex can be showed up in all life stages:
- before or after birth
- during the childhood
- in the youth/during puberty
- at adulthood
Some people get to know that they are intersex during their transition process. Many do not even know that intersex exists.
Life experiences of intersex people
The life experiences from intersex people are very different, but they are often sharing the experiences of discrimination. Above all (often non-consual) normative medical interventions and their results, but also discrimination in daily life and a lack of legal recognition often restrict intersex people.
